Ailesi, 19. y\u00fczy\u0131lda Kafkasya\u2019dan Osmanl\u0131 topraklar\u0131na g\u00f6\u00e7 etmi\u015f olan \u00c7erkes \u015eaps\u0131\u011f kabilesinden gelen P\u015fevulardand\u0131. Ethem, be\u015f erkek ve bir k\u0131z karde\u015fin en k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fc\u011f\u00fcyd\u00fc. \u0130lk ve orta \u00f6\u011frenimini Band\u0131rma\u2019da yapt\u0131, ancak M\u00fclk\u00ee \u0130dadisi\u2019ni bitiremeden ayr\u0131ld\u0131. Bu birlik, Yunan ve \u0130ngiliz kuvvetlerine kar\u015f\u0131 gerilla sava\u015f\u0131 y\u00fcr\u00fctt\u00fc. Ethem, Ankara\u2019daki 20. Ethem, Kuv\u00e2-yi Seyy\u00e2re\u2019nin da\u011f\u0131t\u0131lmas\u0131n\u0131 ve kendisinin de orduda g\u00f6rev almas\u0131n\u0131 istemedi. Ayr\u0131ca, TBMM\u2019nin \u0130stanbul H\u00fck\u00fcmeti ile anla\u015fma yapaca\u011f\u0131ndan ve \u0130tilaf Devletleri ile i\u015fbirli\u011fi yapaca\u011f\u0131ndan \u015f\u00fcphelendi. Bu nedenlerle, 1921 y\u0131l\u0131n\u0131n ba\u015f\u0131nda TBMM\u2019ye kar\u015f\u0131 isyan etti.
